Bodies Revealed Field Trip Bodies Revealed Field Trip
Mrs. Mischel's Health Science and Jason Arnett's Anatomy classes collaborated in a field trip to view the Bodies Revealed exhibit at the Lexington Center Museum & Gallery in Lexington, Kentucky on December 6th, 2011.  The exhibit is scheduled to be on display until January 8th, 2012.  The exhibit is designed to enlighten, inform and inspire students to learn about the human body.  Visitors of all ages explore deep within the human body in ways that inform but not overwhelm.  There are 14 full-body, human specimens and over 200 organs that tell the story of the miraculous systems at work within each of us every second of our existence.

Approximately 75 students attended the exhibit which took them through a series of galleries providing an up-close look inside the skeletal, muscular, reproductive, respiratory, circulatory and other systems of the human body.  Each specimen on display is preserved through a revolutionary technique called polmer preservation which basically rubberizes the specimen, preserving at a cellular level, showcasing the complexity of the body's many bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs.  The full-body specimens can take more than a year to prepare.  For more information, you can visit: Bodies Revealed.

THINKING ABOUT GOING TO COLLEGE? THINKING ABOUT GOING TO COLLEGE?

Since the kids are in school, have you ever thought about going to college? The idea of returning to school after a long absence can present quite a challenge, but nontraditional students aren’t so nontraditional anymore. Roughly 71 percent of U.S. undergraduates defy the college-student stereotype, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. These students are typically 25 or older. Some are single parents, others are high school dropouts and many face a unique set of financial challenges. Students don’t have to scale these obstacles alone, though.  Colleges want their students to succeed, so many offer support to help less-traditional students earn degrees. Take the first step in the college-planning process by attending the annual Title I parent meeting scheduled at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, May 5 at Magoffin Adult Learning Center. Mr. Terry Burchett, Work and Learn Case Manager, with BSCTC will present “College 101”. If you are just thinking about going to college, Mr. Burchett will present ways that your dream can become a reality. Also, this meeting will give you tips on parent involvement along with the opportunity to review and offer input on fiscal year 2017 Federal Programs and the District Comprehensive Improvement Plan. The meeting will end by 2:00 p.m. followed by refreshments and door prizes.  For more information, call Debbie Swiney or Kim Patrick at 349-6117. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

The Magoffin County School Board members and administrators have decided, in the interest of student safety, to dismiss classes on Monday, August 21st in observance of the solar eclipse. Superintendent Scott Helton and school officials made the determination to cancel classes since the eclipse will occur toward the end of the day when buses are lining up to transport children home.

“At a time when it would be impossible to keep the eyes of all students from looking at the harmful rays during the eclipse, we felt it best to keep them and their vision safe, which is our primary concern. Most of Kentucky will experience the eclipse and like many other districts in our area, we decided that it was in the best interest of our students to cancel all scheduled classes on Monday, August 21st.”

Though students will not be at school when the eclipse takes place, teachers, parents, and students are encouraged to learn more about this unique event, which last occurred 99 years ago, by researching and discovering lesson plans that will help them understand and learn about the historic and scientific implications of the solar eclipse.

REALITY STORE FOR HWMS STUDENTS SPONSORED BY GEAR-UP Reality Stor

Gear-Up, in conjunction with the Magoffin County Extension Office, will be conducting a Reality Store On Wednesday, September 25th, beginning at 8:30 AM. Many of you may be familiar with this event. Eighth and Ninth Grade middle and high school students choose a career they are interested in, and we provide students with the average monthly salary for that career. Students then travel around to various booths and pay monthly bills like insurance, housing, utilities, transportation, etc.

We trust that this will be a worthwhile endeavor that allows students to take a serious look at their futures and teaches lessons in career planning and financial responsibility. We also trust it will provide our students with an overall sense of gratitude as they come face to face with the “reality” that their parents/caretakers face each month.

Ninth Grade will participate from 8:30 AM --11:00 AM
Eighth Grade will participate from 12:30-2:45 PM
