HWMS Lady Hornets Wing Big! HWMS Lady Hornets 2010
The HWMS Lady Hornets entered the Sag Campbell Memorial Tournament last week and came away as victors. The Sag Campbell Memorial Tournament was held at Allen Middle School September 8th thru the 11th and consisted of 6th, 7th, and 8th teams.
The Lady Hornets 8th grade team lost to Stumbo Middle School in the first round.  Stumbo Middle went on to win the tournament, but the 8th grade Lady Hornets were the only team to lose only by a slim two point margin; the other teams lost by 20 or more. The 7th grade Lady Hornets had success though as they went on to win the championship in their bracket.
“This is the best 7th grade team that has come through the program since 2002,” Coach Holbrook said.
The 2002 team consisted of big name players such as Michaela Howard, Brittany Manns, and Ashley Jade Howard who helped lead the Magoffin County Lady Hornets to a regional championship in 2006 and a 57th district championship in 2007.
The 7th grade Lady Hornets were led in scoring by Jazzy Howard through most of the tournament. In the first round Howard scored a total of 16 points.
Jesse Hale wasn’t far behind, scoring 12 points. In the semi-final game Howard scored 12 points with Danielle Slusher coming in second scoring 10 points.
In the championship game the 7th grade Lady Hornets were led in scoring by Jesse Hale. Hale had 12 points and  Lynzee Howard wasn’t far behind had 10 points.
“I’m very proud of the girls. It was a good team effort and I couldn’t have asked for more,” Holbrook said. “The girls have made my first year as coach very enjoyable, they come to practice ready to go and physically and mentally. I would like to thank Mr. Johnson for coming to every game of the tournament and would also like the parents and students for showing their support for this program.”

This Thursday night, September 16th, the HWMS Lady Hornets will be in action at home against Louisa Middle School in their first conference game of the season.
The Lady Hornets would like to invite everyone to come out and show their support. Don’t miss out on a minute of Hornet action and join in on the excitement of Hornet athletics. Article taken from Salyersville Independent

District Presents Parent Math Workshop District Presents Parent Math Workshop

Family Math Workshops are formal opportunities for parents of students in grades K-8 to learn strategies on how they can help their children understand math. Participants will explore math topics through practice and conversation under the guidance of a facilitator. These workshops will be a great opportunity for parents and community members to increase their knowledge of general math skills, while enhancing their understanding of how mathematics is taught in the classroom. Today it’s important for students to have not only conceptual understanding but also fluency in order to complete modern-day math test questions. Magoffin Schools are working hard to partner with parents to ensure that all of the district’s children are ready for high school and on track for success in college or a career. Parents may attend a workshop at any one of the scheduled locations.

THINKING ABOUT GOING TO COLLEGE? THINKING ABOUT GOING TO COLLEGE?

Since the kids are in school, have you ever thought about going to college? The idea of returning to school after a long absence can present quite a challenge, but nontraditional students aren’t so nontraditional anymore. Roughly 71 percent of U.S. undergraduates defy the college-student stereotype, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. These students are typically 25 or older. Some are single parents, others are high school dropouts and many face a unique set of financial challenges. Students don’t have to scale these obstacles alone, though.  Colleges want their students to succeed, so many offer support to help less-traditional students earn degrees. Take the first step in the college-planning process by attending the annual Title I parent meeting scheduled at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, May 5 at Magoffin Adult Learning Center. Mr. Terry Burchett, Work and Learn Case Manager, with BSCTC will present “College 101”. If you are just thinking about going to college, Mr. Burchett will present ways that your dream can become a reality. Also, this meeting will give you tips on parent involvement along with the opportunity to review and offer input on fiscal year 2017 Federal Programs and the District Comprehensive Improvement Plan. The meeting will end by 2:00 p.m. followed by refreshments and door prizes.  For more information, call Debbie Swiney or Kim Patrick at 349-6117. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

School to be cancelled for Solar Eclipse Event Solar Eclipse

The Magoffin County School Board members and administrators have decided, in the interest of student safety, to dismiss classes on Monday, August 21st in observance of the solar eclipse. Superintendent Scott Helton and school officials made the determination to cancel classes since the eclipse will occur toward the end of the day when buses are lining up to transport children home.

“At a time when it would be impossible to keep the eyes of all students from looking at the harmful rays during the eclipse, we felt it best to keep them and their vision safe, which is our primary concern. Most of Kentucky will experience the eclipse and like many other districts in our area, we decided that it was in the best interest of our students to cancel all scheduled classes on Monday, August 21st.”

Though students will not be at school when the eclipse takes place, teachers, parents, and students are encouraged to learn more about this unique event, which last occurred 99 years ago, by researching and discovering lesson plans that will help them understand and learn about the historic and scientific implications of the solar eclipse.
