Our Local Fiscal Court Supports Read Across America Our Local Fiscal Court Supports Read Across America

The Read Across America Celebration kicked off during a recent Fiscal Court meeting as Dr. Charles Hardin signed a proclamation declaring the months of March & April as this year’s official NEA Read Across America months.  MCEA President Victoria Felber-Keeton and SME student Danielle Auxier presented the proclamation.  This will be the 14th year Magoffin County Schools have partnered with the National Education Association in building a nation of readers through its signature program, Read Across America (RAA).  During RAA, Magoffin Schools reaffirm their commitment to investing in our children and giving them an essential tool for success in school and in life:  the ability to read.  Students in the Gifted/Talented program prepared an entertaining program featuring a puppet show, music, song, and dance along with special guests – Cat in the Hat and Thing One.  Principals at each school encourage parents and community members to show their support for reading by attending one of the scheduled events.  You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.

Remembering South Magoffin's Johnny Cash Johnny Cash

On December 28, 2016, at approximately 6:30 pm, Johnny Cash's life abruptly ended. He was hit by a car, in front of Lake Front Church of God on Middle Fork at the age of 5. Johnny came to South Magoffin at the young age of 6 weeks old and quickly won the hearts of the faculty, staff and kids through his happiness and his unwavering companionship and love. It never failed that Johnny was sitting at the door every morning to greet everyone with a smile, wag or a lick. Johnny enjoyed playing with the students and they look forward to his unconditional love and snuggles, which often included playing catch.  Johnny was the center of attention at every assembly, meeting or event. After making his rounds, Johnny always looked forward to a nap in his recliner in Mr. Rice's office, only after he'd finished his daily sausage biscuit. It wasn't uncommon to find Johnny sneaking in the staff workroom at lunchtime to see what was available to eat, only to snarl his nose after being offered a bite. Johnny was an extremely picky eater. Life without Johnny will never be the same. We will miss his adoring eyes that said so much and paws that had a gentle touch. You left behind many broken hearts and happy memories too. Your presence we'll miss, your memories we'll treasure. Loving you always, forgetting you never.

Magoffin County Cooperative Extension Office's Backpack Program back pack

In remembrance of Johnny Cash we are asking for donations for Magoffin County Cooperative Extension Office's backpack program. While children receive nutritious meals at school there is often a lack of food at home. In an effort to provide nutritious foods for hungry children during the weekend , the Magoffin County Cooperative Extension Service organized the Backpack Program. This program provides a backpack of food for children in need over the weekend during the school year. One hundred and ten youth from local schools were identified by family resource center directors, teachers and principals to participate in the program. The program has been possible through regular volunteers and ongoing donations from, a grocery store, food pantries, businesses, and several food drives. Due to recent hardships, many sources have been unable to donate which in return makes it difficult to provide these students with food. If you would like to help, you can drop off non perishables at the Magoffin County Cooperative Extension Office or contact Kim Campbell at (606) 349-1236. All donations would be greatly appreciated. The Magoffin County School Board members and administrators have decided, in the interest of student safety, to dismiss classes on Monday, August 21st in observance of the solar eclipse. Superintendent Scott Helton and school officials made the determination to cancel classes since the eclipse will occur toward the end of the day when buses are lining up to transport children home.

“At a time when it would be impossible to keep the eyes of all students from looking at the harmful rays during the eclipse, we felt it best to keep them and their vision safe, which is our primary concern. Most of Kentucky will experience the eclipse and like many other districts in our area, we decided that it was in the best interest of our students to cancel all scheduled classes on Monday, August 21st.”

Though students will not be at school when the eclipse takes place, teachers, parents, and students are encouraged to learn more about this unique event, which last occurred 99 years ago, by researching and discovering lesson plans that will help them understand and learn about the historic and scientific implications of the solar eclipse.

South Magoffin Elementary Hosted the Bears Photo by Brandie Howard

MAGOFFIN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Elementary students came to school Monday to find a new live-in mascot waiting for them.

A bear has moved in behind South Magoffin Elementary. School officials say the bear was first spotted Friday evening.

"You can see his paws [prints] on the back of the dumpsters and scratch marks and things like that," Principal Mark Rice said. "He keeps putting his nose up in the air so I guess he smells that good cooking in our school there today."

Monday morning the bear was still hanging around, taking a nap under bushes behind the school. Pawprints and scratch marks on the locked dumpsters indicated the bear had been looking for an easy meal.

School officials joked that they think the bear is there because it wants to be the new mascot or it's looking for an education.

"Education is probably the most important thing he's thinking today," Rice laughed. "Evidently, he's not eating too good so he's wanting some type of education to learn. And we've kidded inside about how he showed up."

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife officials from Frankfort say the bear looks to be about six to eight years old.
