Mr. Watson's 7th Grade Classes have spent this week learning how to separate water molecules into two elements using electrolysis. Using water, test tubes, batteries and a flame, students setup the experiment by submersing water filled test tubes into water and exposing them to electricity, using 9 volt batteries. Students watched as the water in the test tubes were transformed into hydrogen in one tube and oxygen in the other. Then, using a flame, students ignited the hydrogen in the test tube, producing a "pop."
This experiment shows how elements are not created or eliminated, but changed, as what happens in nature. Students also learn properties of hydrogen, as well as the process of electrolysis.
