A single run separated the Lady Hornets from winning the 57th District tournament. But these young ladies found themselves getting a very nice consolation prize: A trip to the 15h Region Tournament for the first time since 2005.
Magoffin Co. punched their ticket to Stone Crest (site of 15th Region Tournament and host school Prestonsburg High) by beating the Lawrence Co. Lady Bulldogs by a score of 6-3.
The 57th District Championship was as big a rollercoaster as it gets. Magoffin took on Johnson Central for the title in a game that took 15 innings and 3 days to complete. The Lady Hornets opened the game red hot, scoring 4 runs in the1st inning. Johnson Central answered back, scoring one run in the 1st, and two more in the 3rd to give us a 4-3 score, which would remain until the 5th inning. Magoffin added two more runs to their total in the 6th, giving them a 6-3 lead with only an inning and a half to play. But the Lady Eagles would not go away quietly, scoring two desperation runs in the bottom of the 6th, and cutting Magoffin’s lead to 6-5 heading in to what most assumed would be the 7th and final inning. Magoffin went scoreless in the bottom of the 7th, and only needed to protect their 1 run lead to win the District Championship. As the lady Hornets took the field in the bottom of the 7th, Mother Nature stepped in and postponed this game for two days with only three outs remaining. Johnson Central tied the game and after 15 innings, got the go-ahead run and the District Title.
The lady Hornets pounded Lawrence Co. early on, putting 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning. The Lady Bulldogs picked up 3 runs of their own in the 3rd inning to bring the score to 5-3, which would remain the score until the top of the 7th. Senior Brandi Howard would add one more run to the lead for good measure as she was hit by a pitch, stole 2nd base, went to 3rd on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Kelsey Prater picked up the win with a whopping 15 strikeouts against only two walks. The win moved the Lady Hornets to 25-9 on the season.
The 15th Region Tournament began on Monday, and a recap of the events can be found right here in next week’s edition of Salyersville Independent Sports!
