Nearly 600 attend Promising Practices Summit

Nearly 600 persons attended the largest multi-district K-12 educational professional learning event in Eastern Kentucky’s history October 24 in Pikeville, KY.   Ninety-two teachers, 34 students, and 17 district teams presented at the National Promising Practices summit sponsored by the KY Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) as part of the Race to the Top “Appalachian Renaissance Initiative (ARI).”

Fifth grade South Magoffin students in Mr. Steve Cole's class interacted with Mrs. Jennifer Howard's Magoffin County High School's Math class using a mondopad. Breanna Ables, a junior in Mrs. Howard's class taught a lesson on the addition of integers.

The MCEAA Boys Basketball Season has Begun!!

Can't get enough basketball?  The Magoffin County Elementary Boys' Basketball schedules for North, South, and SGS are now online!! Now you can fill your scedule with basketball every night!!  To view the schedule of your favorite school, just click on their mascot below.








Demolition has begun on the Herald Whitaker Middle School after a EF-3 tornado did fatal damage to the sstructure in 2012.  The building was in service for almost 24 years.

5th grade student from South Magoffin Elementary chose France to research in Social Studies class.


The Magoffin County High School Hornets made history Friday Night when, for the first time, they became Champions of the 7th District.  With a 4-0 District record, they will host the first round of play-off games starting November 7th.

Sixth grade students at South Magoffin learned how to paint sunset silhouettes from Mrs. Henrietta Fletcher.

Fifth grade students at North Magoffin Elementary have been actively learning about early civilizations during a Culture Quest Unit in Mrs. Minerva Arnett’s 5th grade Social Studies class. During this unit, students discovered how culture in the United States has been influenced by languages, literature, arts, beliefs and behaviors of diverse groups. Students enjoyed creating and presenting their own Native American displays that included shelter, weapons, tools and resources that specific groups used to survive based upon both geography and climate. Using air dry clay, students shaped and designed their own pottery modeled after those used by Native Americans in the river valleys and in the southwest.

The SME Cougar Cheerleading Squad are the 2014 Hallo-Fest Champs!!

South Magoffin Elementary varsity cheer squad competed at Hallo-Fest Cheer and Dance competition on Saturday. The team won a 1st place award in Elementary 2 1/2 minute cheer routine, Best Technique, and overall Grand Champions. This was a great experience for the team as they prepare for Elementary KAPOS Regionals in November. The team’s cheer coach is Adrienne Howard and gymnastics coach is Vernetta Cole. South Magoffin Elementary’s staff and students are so very proud of these girls showcasing their cougar pride.

NME Students are Too Smart for Drugs

In honor of drug awareness week, North Magoffin students pledged to be "too smart for drugs" by dressing as nerds.  The school has participated in several anti drug activities this month.

Ron Cole Visits NME

All students and staff from North Magoffin Elementary were presented a show by Ron Cole with the topics of drug abuse and bullying. Ron took time with everyone and talked to all students about drug abuse and bullying. The students all enjoyed the show.

HWMS Is "Pinked Out"

Herald Whitaker Middle School students & staff participated in a "Pink Out" on Friday, October 17, 2014, to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The MCHS Dance Team will be hosting their annual DANCE JAM for students grades K-8, on Saturday, November 8th from 9:00-12:00.
