Reading Discovery Featuring Former First Lady Barbara Bush

North Magoffin Elementary 5th grade students had the chance on Thursday, January 29th to take part in a unique distance learning opportunity presented by the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum and Discovery Education. Mrs. Minerva Arnett’s students shared an exciting reading experience with Former First Lady Barbara Bush and Discovery Education's Hall Davidson. Classrooms across the globe watched the live presentation as Mrs. Bush and students read excerpts from the award-winning book “Rushmore” and Mr. Davidson demonstrated how the book literally comes to life using augmented reality technology. Former First Lady Barbara Bush chose the book “Rushmore” by Lynn Curlee so students can learn the story behind this national treasure, from the engineering feat of building the landmark to its historical significance. Students in all 50 states, Canada and Ghana were all connected through this highly educational and informative virtual program. Topics addressed by the former first lady included the importance of literacy, implementing student use of technology and speaking out against bullying.

North Magoffin Elementary participated in signing the Declaration for the Right to School Libraries

As part of National School Library Month North Magoffin Elementary participated in  signing the  Declaration for the Right to School Libraries.

The Declaration for the Right to School Libraries, an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of ALA, focuses on the vital role that school libraries play in students’ education. Among the concepts covered is the idea that school libraries are integral to literacy and lifelong learning, whether it’s to sharpen reading skills or learn critical thinking skills that will help them navigate the internet.  For those without access to print materials or the internet at home, school libraries level the playing field, allowing everyone an equal chance at success and education. The students signatures will be on display at the State Capital in Frankfort, Kentucky.
