Information for Students Experiencing Homelessness
Students living in any of the following living conditions may qualify for certain rights and protections under the federal McKinney-Vento Act: Living in a shelter, motel, car, park, abandoned building or campground Sharing housing due to loss of housing or economic hardship Living in substandard housing Unaccompanied youth (not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian)
Eligible students have the right to: Immediate enrollment in school, even without documents normally required for enrollment Enroll in school and fully participate while the school district gathers required documents Enroll in the local school near where you're staying or continue going to your school of origin (the school you went to when you last had a safe and stable place to live or the school where you were last enrolled) If the school district believes that the school selected is not in the student's best interest, then the district must provide the parent, guardian, or unaccompanied student with a written explanation of its position and inform the student of the right to appeal its decision Receive transportation to and from the school of origin upon request Receive free school meals Access to all educational services, which may include counseling, tutoring, special education, gifted programs, and extracurriculars
