Magoffin County Schools mourns the loss of Neil “Nehi” West.
Mr. West was an integral part of the Magoffin County school system for many years before his retirement in June 2025. Even after retiring, he continued to serve the district part-time, always willing to step in and help wherever he was needed.
Nehi was deeply devoted to Magoffin County athletics and cared greatly for our students and staff. He was dependable, punctual, hardworking, and, above all, genuinely caring. His dedication to our schools and the people within them made a lasting impact on our district.
He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him. We are grateful for his many years of service to Magoffin County Schools and for the countless ways he supported our school community.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched during this difficult time.

Magoffin County Schools is reaching out today regarding a serious safety concern involving school buses. Since the beginning of this school year, several bus drivers have reported vehicles passing their buses while the red lights were flashing and the stop signs were extended.
This is extremely concerning. Each morning and afternoon, school buses make hundreds of stops throughout Magoffin County. At many of those stops, students must enter or cross the roadway. When a driver fails to stop for a school bus, a child's life can be put at risk in a matter of seconds.
The community should also be aware of an important change in Kentucky law. Drivers approaching a stopped school bus from either direction are required to stop when the bus is displaying its flashing red lights and stop sign. This requirement now applies on highways with four or more lanes unless the opposing lanes are separated by an elevated barrier or an unpaved median. A center turn lane or painted median does not exempt opposing traffic from stopping.
Because of the reports received from bus drivers, Magoffin County Schools has contacted local law enforcement and requested assistance in monitoring school bus routes and areas where violations are occurring. Passing a stopped school bus is not only against the law—it places students in unnecessary danger.
Everyone in our community is asked to help prevent a tragedy. Please slow down when approaching a school bus, eliminate distractions, and be prepared to stop when the bus's warning lights are activated.
Our bus drivers work hard each day to safely transport students, but they cannot do it alone. They need every driver on our roads to do their part.
When the red lights are flashing and the stop sign is out, STOP. A child's life may depend on it.
Thank you for helping Magoffin County Schools protect the students of our community.

Five Stars is the highest quality rating awarded through Kentucky All STARS.
🌟 North Magoffin Elementary – Five Stars 🌟 South Magoffin Elementary – Five Stars 🌟 Salyersville Grade School – Five Stars
This outstanding achievement reflects the high-quality early childhood experiences being provided to Magoffin County’s youngest learners each day. Our preschool and Head Start classrooms are supported by highly qualified and dedicated teachers and instructional staff who provide developmentally appropriate and differentiated instruction to meet the individual needs of every child.
Students participate in engaging, hands-on learning experiences that support early literacy and mathematics, language and communication, social-emotional development, independence, creativity, and school readiness. Strong family engagement and partnerships are also an important part of our programs, helping connect learning at school with support at home.
Earning Five Stars at all three preschool sites demonstrates Magoffin County Schools’ district-wide commitment to excellence in early childhood education. We are extremely proud of our preschool and Head Start teachers, instructional assistants, family advocates, staff, students, and families who contributed to this accomplishment.
Three schools. Three Five-Star ratings. One commitment to giving our youngest learners a strong start.
